When more of a single input is added, if at least one other factor remains fixed, output increases at a decreasing rate. The slope of the Total Output curve is the Marginal Product of the factor being added.

    As shown to the right as more of the factor is added the rate of increase in output is diminishing. Remember, this result is because at least one factor of production is fixed in supply.
