Consider demand for a moment; are there differences in how consumers might respond to, say, a 10% increase in the price of toothpaste, compared to a 10% increase in the price of new cars?

   The answer is, most likely, yes (at least for most people). An elasticity measure will let us more precisely say how great the difference is, and will even allow us to compare these two responses.
